Calgary water and what it does to grout
Calgary's water is hard. Grout is porous. Put the two together in a shower and the sequence is always the same: mineral scale settles into the joints, the joints stain, you re-seal them every couple of springs, and eventually one fails and lets water behind the wall. By the time you can see it on the outside, the damage inside has been happening for a while.
The panel system has no joints in the field of the wall — nothing running across the wet area to break down. It's non-porous, so scale sits on the surface and wipes off instead of soaking in, and it's mildew-resistant for the same reason. It's also VOC- and phthalate-free, which matters in a small room you steam up twice a day.
On honesty: it is more scratch-resistant than acrylic and most tile alternatives, and it won't yellow in sunlight. It is not scratch-proof — no bathroom surface is. Abrasive pads and scouring creams will mark it. Warm water and a soft cloth is genuinely all it needs, which is most of the point of having it.

A wall day
- Old tile or surround removed and taken away.
- Wall checked for rot, movement and square.
- Any repairs agreed with you before we go further.
- Panels measured, cut and fitted to the alcove.
- Trims, shelves and sealing completed.
- Cures overnight, in use the next morning.
About the wall system
Does it really go over my existing tile?
Over the wall, yes — but the old surround usually comes off first. The point of the system is that it doesn't need the substrate rebuilt from scratch the way re-tiling does, not that we cover up whatever is already there. If we find the wall behind is soft, it gets fixed before anything goes on it.
What is the panel actually made of?
A solid composite panel with the finish through the surface rather than printed on top, so a scuff doesn't expose a different colour underneath. It's non-porous, VOC- and phthalate-free.
Is it scratch-proof?
No. It is more scratch-resistant than acrylic and most tile alternatives, and it won't yellow in sunlight — but abrasive pads and scouring creams will mark it. Warm water and a soft cloth is all it needs.
How do I clean it?
Warm water and a soft cloth for everyday, and a non-abrasive bathroom cleaner when it needs more. No scouring powder, no green scrubbing pads, no magic erasers — those are abrasives. There is no grout to seal and no annual re-caulking, which is the whole point.
